NONSENSE ALWAYS MAKES PERFECT SENSE

Dr. Seuss often used “nonsense” as a means to engage with life’s broad range of situations and as a way to break down monumental ideas into simple, digestible truths.

He always believed that “Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope.” This indispensable life skill allows us to see what is essential, no matter how big the idea or task. And in the case of Dr. Seuss, it always keeps us laughing as we encounter the many twists and turns in life.

Dr. Seuss’s wisdom in One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish is simple: when facing life’s most challenging conundrums, break them down to the elemental and do so with a healthy dose of fun and fantasy. Nonsense always makes perfect sense, whether you are in life’s first decade or you have completed many!

A SIMPLE APPROACH TO LIFE:
LAUGH A LITTLE

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish is an iconic story that breaks down the early reading process through nonsensical images and pure fantasy. It celebrates Dr. Seuss’s ability to show us how elemental life can be if we just stop, focus, engage, and laugh.

This powerful idea was not lost on reviewers and critics of the day, who waited anxiously for every new Dr. Seuss book release. Upon publication of Seuss’s One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish in 1961, Ellen Lewis Buell, the then head reviewer for The New York Times wrote: “This one is simple enough in vocabulary to encourage the pre-schooler who may already be trying to pick out words for himself. That is, of course, if he can just stop laughing long enough to take advantage of the opportunity.”

Dr. Seuss himself leaves us with these parting words at the end of this fast-paced rhyme: “Today is gone. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one. Every day, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.” In these witty and simple lines, Dr. Seuss leaves us with one of his greatest perspectives on life, one that resonates deeply, whether you are in your first decade or a few after that!
